Dr Jim Szana's dental career started as a 19 year old freshman at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, the youngest member of his class. When he graduated at 23 he became the youngest person to receive a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in the School's History.
Jim entered the United States Air Force Dental Corps and was first stationed in Dover, Delaware along with 13 other dentists. After nine months in Dover, the Air Force decided they couldn't fight the war in Viet Nam without him, and Jim became the last USAF dentist to spend a year in Viet Nam. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal of his service in Viet Nam as he says, "Fighting the war against tooth decay in the face of repeated enemy attacks!"
He then was stationed at Bitburg AFB in Germany for the next 31/2 years and left the military as a Major. By the time he left Bitburg, ha had worked with 40 other American dentists. He had also learned how to use whatever equipment and materials that were available and how his fellow dentists operated.
In 1976, Jim moved to South Dakota and bought the medical-dental building in Murdo and has practiced dentistry there continuously to the present. Because Murdo was not a full time dental practice, he began working with Dr. Carmen Sutley as an associate in Ft. Pierre. A year later he joined Dr. Lloyd Johnson with an office sharing arrangement for 9 years.
When the St. Charles Hotel was renovated in 1985, Jim designed the present office and founded Dentistry at the St. Charles LLC, the 7th LLC in the entire state of South Dakota. Dr. Wyman Whitney closed his office on Pierre St. and moved some of his dental equipment into the St.Charles and practiced his last 5 years of dentistry with Jim. Dr. Trent Jepson joined Jim as an associate for about 5 years, and then moved back to California to a "better" climate.
Dr. Alan Cazan, a new graduate of Loma Linda, joined Jim and within a year the two became a partnership lasting 17 years. He moved to Spokane, WA for family reasons.
In 2009, Drs. Nicholas and Chelsey Renemans moved back home, because Dr. Chelsey Roberts-Renemans grew up in Pierre. The Renemas are purchasing Dentistry at the St Charles and as they increase, Jim will decrease.
Jim has practiced dentistry with nearly 50 dentists in his career. His chair side assistant Mindy Rathburn has worked with him since 1981. Karen Nelson has been his chair side assistant in Murdo for 20 years. Bookkeeper, orthodontic assistant, dental supply supervisor, Cindy Jost has been continuously a part of Jim's business since he started his practice in Murdo in 1976. Five other employees, Diane Arhart and Heather Whitney [dental hygienists], Deb Allison and Cheryl Iverson [receptionists] and Misty Hoftiezer [dental assistant] have all worked over 10 years at Dentistry at the St. Charles. Jim would never replace these loyal employees. They make him look so good.
Jim has been doing orthodontics since 1981 and has over 2,000 completed cases. He taught two orthodontic continuing education courses for the United States Dental Institute for 16 years. In all, he taught about 150 classes in over 25 different large cities across the US. [Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, Omaha, Atlanta, San Francisco, Newport Beach etc.] Jim also taught courses in Moscow, Russia on 4 separate trips. His last class in Moscow featured a "hands on" course attended by 72 dentists from all over Russia.
As one of two Board Certified Dental Consultants in South Dakota, Dr. Szana has worked as a part time consultant for Delta Dental of South Dakota for over 30 years. "Being a dental consultant is an education in itself. It brings me in contact with all the new strategies and techniques being implemented throughout dentistry."
South Dakota Governor Michael Rounds appointed Jim to the South Dakota Health commission, the only dental representative. He proudly served all 8 years until the Commission was disbanded.
Dr. Szana has been asked to serve on the Medicaid Solutions Workgroup that Governor Dennis Daugaard requested. As one of the top 6% of dental Medicaid providers in South Dakota, Jim is looking forward to helping find solutions to one of the biggest concerns in State Government.
When Dr. Szana is not practicing dentistry he is apt to be playing the piano somewhere, often with his jazz trio. For more information see jimszanatrio.com. Jim and his wife, Sandy live in Pierre and hope to be part of the community for a long, long time.
